Rites of Passage Programs

The Rites of Passage Programs, as implemented by the Omega
CDC, is an Afro-Centric education which builds self-esteem and self-worth while
developing and maintaining family, community and spiritual balance.
Omega has a program for boys, Straight Street; one for girls,
Daughters of the Nile, and one for parents, Kinship. At present, the Rites of
Passage programs are active in three schools:
Edison Elementary, a public school, Dayton View Academy and Omega School of
Excellence, both charter schools.
The goals of the Rites
of Passage programs are:
- Enhanced
self-esteem, self-image and self-awareness
- Increased
academic performance
- Truancy
reduction
- Reduction
of suspensions/disciplinary actions
- Increased
awareness of culture and history
- Enhanced
relationships with family and peers
- Increased
understanding and awareness of responsibility to the community
The objectives are:
- to encourage an appreciation of the African family
for survival
- to understand the greatness of culture and tradition
- to enhance youth's awareness of their role in the
development of their community and friendships . to foster knowledge
among youth of the specific nature of their sexuality
- to increase the appropriate and practical use of
time, work habits and money
- to direct interests and attitudes toward creative
self-expression as a meaningful vehicle
- to use nurturing, self-loving approaches to a variety
of everyday, as well as historical or work-related situations
